Solar Panel Thermal Inspection

Radiometric drone thermography for operating solar arrays across Maryland — flown to the IEC 62446-3 standard for outdoor infrared thermography of PV systems, not just a colorized flyover. For rooftop commercial arrays and utility-scale solar farms alike, we find the underperforming panels and failing strings a monitoring dashboard's kWh totals don't show you until the loss has already added up.

What a Solar Panel Thermal Inspection Actually Catches

Cell-level hot spots — the earliest visible sign of a failing cell, and a real fire-risk indicator if left undetected

Failed or failing bypass diodes, which silently drag down an entire string's output even when every panel looks fine from the ground

Cracked cells, delamination, and module mismatch that reduce output well before a monitoring platform's kWh numbers make the loss obvious

Soiling and shading patterns that show up in the same thermal pass, beyond just cell-level defects

Flown to the IEC 62446-3 Standard

IEC TS 62446-3 is the published international standard for outdoor aerial infrared thermography of PV modules and plants, and it sets a real bar most drone-only competitors don't fly to. It requires a minimum of 600 W/m² of in-plane irradiance to fly — below that threshold, a defect's heat signature drops into measurement noise and a "clean" scan doesn't actually prove anything. In practice, that means solar-noon flights on clear or lightly hazy days, not whatever slot happens to be open on the schedule. Every finding on our reports is measured and reviewed by an ASNT/ITC Level I & II Certified Infrared Thermographer, the same credential behind our radiometric roof-moisture survey work.

What a Compliant Report Includes

Capture conditions logged for every flight — irradiance, ambient temperature, wind, and sky state — so the data is defensible, not just a set of pretty thermal images

Every finding located, measured, and classified by the standard's own severity tiers: normal variation, a differential worth scheduling a repair for, and anything large enough or safety-relevant enough to need immediate action

A documented limitations section noting any unassessable frames or coverage gaps, rather than pretending every panel was seen at full confidence

Findings delivered as a plant-referenced report your O&M team, EPC, or panel manufacturer's warranty desk can act on directly

Solar Tracker Alignment Inspection

On single-axis tracker sites, misalignment is a different problem than a cell-level hot spot, and it needs a different tool to find it. Foundation settlement, worn motors and gears, calibration drift, or storm damage can all knock a tracker's angle off — often by just a couple degrees, but that adds up to real, ongoing energy loss across a large field. Catching it isn't a thermal problem, it's a precision-positioning problem: we fly high-resolution RGB imagery with RTK-precision GPS to measure each tracker's actual orientation against what it should be, down to fractions of a degree. A 100-acre farm that would take a full day or more to walk or drive row by row gets covered in a few hours from the air.

Same site visit, two different fault categories: module-level thermal defects and tracker alignment issues can be flown together on utility-scale sites — one radiometric pass for hot spots and diode failures, one RTK-referenced RGB pass for tracker positioning.

Built for Every Stage of a Solar Asset

Ongoing Performance Monitoring

For owners and asset managers running a solar array today. A recurring thermal pass catches underperforming strings and early cell failures before they show up as a meaningful revenue loss — ask about a scheduled compliance retainer.

Pre-Commissioning Inspection

Before you sign off on a freshly built array and release final payment, a thermal pass catches workmanship defects while they're still the installer's responsibility to fix, not yours.

Acquisition Due Diligence

Buying an operating solar asset? A dated, IEC-referenced thermal survey gives your technical advisors and financing team a real health check on the panels, not just a paper record of past production.

Flat-Rate Pricing

Priced the same as our solar pre-install surveys — one flat rate, confirmed in writing before scheduling, no truck roll or hourly billing to estimate around.

Property TypeRate
Residential (single roof)$225 flat per roof
